Anyway, in this arc Mary Jane knows that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. The arc starts with a senator that is complaining about the fact that he is corrupt and he wants to stop being corrupt, but that doesn't matter anymore for the entire arc....yeah.
He is attending an event at a museum and he is attracted to an artifact that they somehow allow him to observe and he wears it and releases Kulan Gath who is a great wizard from the universe of Red-Sonja (who she is will be explained later). Spider-Man suddenly finds himself in a World of Warcraft type of setting and he is the only one that remembers who he is. Kulan Gath notices that and he calls the villains to stop Spider-Man and he turns Mary Jane to Red-Sonja and makes her fight Spider-Man. Spider-Man of course needs to fix this situation.
The art is weird at times but I don't really care (the positions of people) since it's not important except several panels that would look really good with good artists. The art is okay, but there is a small place where the colorist half asses it and it is with a knife that Red-Sonja has that turns from a detailed knife to a one color knife and back again. There are pencil drawings attached in the end that make me wonder what the hell happened to them, but the pencils are of figures and not an entire page so I can't really judge.
The villains that appear in this are Scorpion, Hobgoblin, Venom and the Lizard. They are of course in a style that fits the Warcraft theme - the Hobgoblin has a giant bat as a glider...
There are several holes in the story: we learn that Kulan Gath has taken over and changed just a part of the city and the cops are on the other side trying to deal with the situation. Red Sonja and the Hobgoblin step out of that bubble and his glider returns to normal but they are still the same - clothing and mentality - they haven't returned to the people they once were.
Also Red Sonja when confronted by Spider-Man realizes that she is Mary Jane but other people don't remember their real identity. Also Kulan Gath is shown to have a power over the people and the villains but he doesn't really uses it.
Since this is old times and people don't remember their past, they think Spider-Man is a demon. There is comedy but it isn't really funny - J. Jonah Jameson turns to a scribe for Kulan Gath, and Joseph "Robbie" Robertson appears in this.
Now, I'm going to spoil this entirely: at the beginning of the arc we see Eddie Brock sitting in a bathroom talking to Venom that appears on the mirror. Venom senses that Kulan Gath calls to him, and after that we see Kulan Gath stealing the symbiote from Eddie Brock while in mid-air but Brock survives. Kulan Gath joins with the symbiote to create Kulan Venom. At the end Eddie Brock wanders to where Kulan Gath is and calls for the symbiote which returns to him for some unknown reason making Kulan Gath weak and Spider-Man is able to beat him and make everything okay again. I shit you not - he just wanders to where Kulan Gath is, calls the symbiote and the symbiote jumps unto him and he becomes Venom and that's it.
This arc is filled with cringe worthy dialog. There is also a weird printing error - between the different parts there is the cover of the comic book of course, and it is on a background that looks like a part of a ship to me. Anyway, there is a place where that background alone is in the middle of a part for no apparent reason.
There is also the never until now re-printed Marvel Team Up #79 which sweetens the pill a bit. This is the comic that this arc is based on. Again there is a guard in a museum that is attracted to an object and wears it and releases Kulan Gath. Spider-Man goes to investigate and ditches the nosy Mary Jane in front of the museum and she sneaks into it and is attracted to another artifact and takes it and turns to Red Sonja and she fights both Kulan Gath and Spider-Man that she thinks is a henchmen of Kulan Gath. What makes this fun is mostly the "announcer" that makes this an event.
Who is Red Sonja you ask? Wikipedia has a detailed answer but she's basically some red headed woman that walks around with armor that is enough to cover her baby maker and her baby caretakers. Needless to say she is big breasted (I was told several times that walking barefoot makes your feet bigger so maybe going without a bra...). Anyway from what I gathered she is from a World of Warcraft type of universe - like the middle ages with an absurdity factor added to it.
There is a new movie based on her comics that is coming out soon, and there is an old movie with Brigitte Nielsen as Red Sonja that is something you watch on TV when you are really bored. I enjoyed it but I barely remember anything from it - just her on a horse riding in green areas and some little Asian looking kid that is some emperor and a fat servant that serves him even when he lost his kingdom and he is acting like an ass.
So this collaboration is meant to sell comics of both characters, and did it work? Not really - sort of. At first I wasn't interested in both characters but after a few months I decided since I want to try different things, to buy a Red Sonja trade sometime - why not. As for Spider-Man - I'm interested in the Marvel Team-Up line and in old Spider-Man comics but not the current one - I have a big TP of Spider-Man that I'll read sometime and see if I change my mind (I will try Ultimate Spider-Man).
So not a big success I guess.
There is the soft core sort of nudity that Sonja has, and there is violence - Kulan Gath decides to gather all red headed women and behead them. And when I say middle ages Warcraft style it means orc like creatures riding on giant beasts - like one orc that rides a giant rat, etc.
Art: 2 - Average
Wow. This is thorough.
