I was excited about this series--Silver Surfer was one of my favorites as a kid back in late 1980s, and his recent appearances in Abnett & Lanning cosmic titles reminded me how much I liked the character. This issue began just the way I wanted it to--with the Surfer reflecting on his role as Galactus' herald with a mixture of regret and acceptance. I like the moral conundrums of his role, and seeing the Surfer in space with Galactus hit the right tone.
The issue then went on to switch its setting from space to Earth, where the Surfer saves a woman from a high-tech police force and runs into the High Evolutionary, who leaves the Surfer (seemingly) powerless. The move to Earth was disappointing, in part because it looks like the rest of the miniseries will not feature anything cosmic but will instead chronicle the Surfer's path to regaining his powers. Despite that, the art was great, and I thought that Greg Pak did a great job in the beginning of this issue with the Surfer's interior monologue.
