I went into this book with an open, yet hopeful mind and I am pleased to say that it was a really strong start. This is very much a set up for the first story arc, but plenty happens and it's a really tantalising opening. One of the keys to writing a new Sherlock Holmes story is the creation of an interesting mystery, something that is going to hook and intrigue the reader. Moore and Reppion succeed in spades. There's a steady build throughout the issue which culminates in a great cliffhanger. It's not exactly earth shattering, in the sense that there are bits and pieces of all sorts of classic whodunnit stories here, from locked room mystery to 70s Batman tales. Yet in a way that's exactly the mix I was hoping for here.
The other key was the characterisation and the overall atmosphere. Holmes and Watson were perfectly captured. I was reminded very much of the classic British Granada TV series, where Jeremy Brett played the detective, which to my mind is very much the best portrayal. One of the highest compliments I could pay. There's great interplay between the two men and their personalities are distinct and accurate. The supporting cast are also well done. As to the atmosphere, this is also nicely done. It was going to be tough to transfer this to the comic book page, but I felt immersed in Holmes's Victorian London.
Art and writing come together well, with some strong pencils and inks, covered by decent colours. There's a great two page sequence where a shot rings out and you see the characters react and attempt to deal with the emergency that's beautifully paced, and laced with tension.
I'm a big fan of Holmes so trying this book was a no brainer for me, but there was always a nagging doubt that a comic could capture the great man very well. So this was truly a pleasant surprise and it's got me on board for the long haul as long as this quality is maintained.
