It's easy to say that this book has the best moment of the week, in which the Kingpin calls upon the Spirit of Vengeance to sabotage Matt Murdock's newly formed Shadowland from the inside out. The Ghost Rider arrives and promptly calls Fisk a fat man and asks what the hell's going on. Also, I did not know that Iron Fist had a soup kitchen. With his symbol in the logo. But moving on.
Sad thing is that's one of the only good things to happen. There's a point where Daredevil is surrounded by other superheroes and asks why they're bothering him and then says "What is this, and intervention?" I realized at that moment that's exactly what it was. Because none of them fear Matt or see him as a danger, he's just acting stupid and he needs to stop it. And that's exactly the feeling you get from reading it. Murdock spends the book saying extreme things like "If they're not with us.....they're against us!" or "Justice is what we make it". But as soon as his old friends call him out on how wrong he's been acting, he starts stammering and tries to find words to say. Daredevil, in this book, is arbitrarily stubborn, foolish and whiny. To make matters worse is the fact that the Hand is portrayed as a bunch of ineffectual stooges. In the last issue, an incredibly large amount of soldiers were wiped out by Bullseye. In this issue, not only does Spiderman comment on how easy it was to break into the temple, but Daredevil refers to his soldiers as cannon fodder. It just adds another layer to already obvious flimsiness of this whole operation. Not once in the entire issue do you feel anything other than Daredevil and his army of Hand soldiers being completely inept.
Luckily, there's a noticeable improvement in Billy Tan's artwork this time around. In the first issue most of the faces were ugly, with odd expressions. Only peculiar thing I noticed here was how almost every character in the book is squinting. There are very few times in this book where a person's eyeballs are visible. The art here is serviceable. I don't enjoy it that much, but it tells the story and isn't as horrific as last time.
It's weird how Shadowland is the event Diggle has been leading up to since the beginning of his time on Daredevil. Because not only does it take Daredevil and make him look like the biggest moron in the Marvel Universe, it also makes me question what I saw interesting with Shadowland in the first place. I'm done with this whole event, I advise everyone reading to do so as well.
