  1. My thoughts exactly on that twist. I’m trying to just think of it as Jack’s aged mind playing tricks on him – I mean, if a madman posed as your father, killed your girlfriend, and lured you to your would-be death (not to mention cut off your arm), don’t you think you might see him occasionally in a crowd, out of the corner of your eye, even when he’s not there? I could buy that easily as a psychological scar.

But I really didn’t like the “I’ve been doing this for centuries” comment and the implication it brings to the whole thing. This has been such a period piece, so down-to-earth, and that’s what I like. But the line is not one of those things that seems ambiguous. Sometimes such lines might not mean what they appear to, but why would the Salesman SAY something like that if it weren’t true? He could easily lie about any number of things, or just be crazy somewhat, and MAYBE it was just a crazy comment made of his personal delusions. But I’m worried that it isn’t.

    • I hadn’t considered that the final twist might just be in Jack’s head. It doesn’t explain where the picture came from, though. But it’s a comforting thought.

Even if the old man was delusional, and that was the reason he said he was immortal, it’s still a jarring change in characterization. He hasn’t been delusional up to this point. He’s been a cold, calculating, patient, methodical, stone-cold killer. Now, suddenly, he’s Jason Voorhees.

    • It was entirely out of character and context and a really lame way that Snyder chose to go when he realized this miniseries was gaining popularity and he wanted to milk it for all it was worth. It is so clearly not the original ending and really was one of the biggest disappointments in comics of recent memory.

  2. Perhaps it would have worked better if it were “we’ve been doing this for centuries,” subtly implying some sort of society (and thereby letting the creepy old man stay just that)

    • Possibly, though they would have had to establish that earlier for it to make sense. I’d be intrigued if it turned out to be some sort of Hobo Illuminati, preying on the weak and vulnerable.

  3. Hobo Illuminati – there’s a book that needs to be written!!!
