Ordinarily, jump scares annoy me in movies. It feels childish, like someone is just yelling “look over there!” and expecting me to freak out. So why are the jump scares in Severed so good? Because Scott Snyder’s given us reason to be jumpy. This scary old guy? He’s a scary guy. The pacing of this series has been so suspenseful, so quiet that the moment someone reaches to grab the main kids from behind you go “oh!” If this book had been nothing but more fake-outs I wouldn’t be as impressed, but it’s not. “Only home for you, girly, is in my belly.” Daaaaymn. (Of course, I read this, and within seconds I was thinking of Fat Bastard. Goddamn you, Mike Myers.) Suspense aside, there are some great relationship moments between Sam and Jack in this issue. That kiss on the skyscraper beam is one of those fantastic “I must have this framed on my wall within the hour” type panels. Attila Futaki is killing on this book. Literally and figuratively.
