‘Serenity: Better Days’ is a comic of contrasts and comparisons. At least so far. It exists entirely to be a comparison, an opposition – what if ‘Firefly’/’Serenity’ directly broke its own format and actually let something nice happen to its protagonists? This idea could be very of the ilk of those Joss Whedon concepts that are a lot better to ponder than to actually read or experience (series four of ‘Buffy’, I’m looking at you). Happily, this, of course, isn’t really the case with ‘Better Days’. Well, at least not the majority of the case. The story is fun and flicks along at the zany wild west clip that we have come to expect from this rag tag bunch of bastards. It’s all legible and understand. It’s just totally unexceptional. This is the only time we’re even gonna see (I hope) these guys have it good and THIS is all we get? It’s just rather blah. It’s good blah… but it’s still blah. The other noteworthy thing to say about it is another comparison this time and this one is to the previous ‘Serenity’ mini – ‘Those Left Behind’. TLS’ biggest failing was its structure, sitting where it did between the show and the film it had no real beginnings or ends and left us with a muddle of middles that was mix of intriguing and annoying. ‘Better Days’ (so far at least) suffers from just being staccato beginnings and sharp endings (and yes, I know this is just a first episode but this did really go beyond your normal opening exposition) nothing ever sits and shows itself just speeding madly along making it really hard to grip into the events. Which is, frankly, hateful.
But on the whole it’s fun and the art is pretty – I just wish I could actually get a proper hook into the setup.
