So this is what happens to Nick Fury? He finds out he has been working for the competition all along? THAT'S the hook?
This is why I have been picking up Bendis' "New Avengers" and "Secret War" over the last few years? To see SHIELD dismantled and completely discreditted? To see Nick go into exile and hole up with a bunch of... uh, plucky kids looking to do some good maybe? Torture? "Agent of Nothing"? WHAT?
How many issues do I buy before I get tired of these ideas and drop the book? Two.
Never mind the last few years, Bendis and company have undermined the motivations of the character over DECADES in one fell swoop, which would be fine if the concept wasn't so lame to begin with.
I have been collecting the Steranko and Lee/Kirby "Agent of SHIELD" stories in "Strange Tales" for many years now. The current implementation of the character in "Secret Warriors" is a pale shadow to these classic efforts.
Of course I'm not being entirely fair. Kirby's stuff is awesome; the Jet Age is captured for all time on his pages. Lee's Fury is the everyman kicking *ss and taking names in the face of Kirby's technological madness. Steranko's work is cutting edge, groundbreaking; a reflection of the turbulent times the stories where written in. These were great works, and perhaps my expectations for "Secret Warriors" are too high.
$3.99 too high.
I thought we were in for something better than this based on Hickman's involvement, something innovative, but the execution on this book seems pretty standard to me.
The art in this book is O.K. in my opinion, but I feel it lacks a certain imaginative quality associated with the character over the years (like I said, STERANKO. KIRBY.) Hickman's effort in "Pax Romana" would resonate, but wait... he's the writer on this one, not the artist.
Regarding the writing, this is supposed to be Hickman's book, but it doesn't feel like Hickman. It feels like more of the same from Bendis. I guess I'm ready for someone other than Bendis to direct what happens to this character, since Nick Fury has become completely irrevlevant on Bendis' watch. No effect on Cvil War. No effect on World War Hulk. Minimal effect on Secret Invasion... etc. Some interesting appearances in New Avengers, but as it turns out the plot threads from those issues have gotten a little stale at this point.
Regarding the Secret Warriors themselves, fairly forgattable performances this issue.
All in all, it's taken me two issues and $8 to figure out I don't want to give this book another chance. Looking forward to Hickman on FF, but "Secret Warriors" is off my list.

You got jipped by your LCS. This issue is 2.99$. Also, to be fair to Hickman the "working for the competition the whole time" is probably part of the "nothing is as it seems" concept. I think that’s just a hook to reel us in and then we’ll see some other twist revealed that topples that notion.
But yeah, this is a little on the bland side for my taste also. There are other books I’m interested in more than this, and those books want my 2.99$.
I guess I totally messed up on the price, please forgive me, I was on a roll writing this. I got hung up on the first issue price and just ran with it. My apologies to Marvel and the iFanboy community for messing up my numbers.
Regarding the book, "bland" is a great adjective to use, I could have saved some time writing up my missive by summing it up the issue in one word!
Thanks for reading the review, my first.
Yeah I hear you too. I wasn’t too blown away by this one either. I like the art enough, but I fear this will just be another Avengers Initiative. Raising out of the ashes of a event to much anticipation only to lead to… blandness.
I might give it another issue or so. Honestly, it was the only title I bought last week. Where should I be putting my money?
