Secret Warriors of late seems to have been on a slow burn, perhaps in an effort to set up the gravitas of the shadow war that Nick Fury is waging behind the scenes of the Marvel U. This issue marks the last in The Last Ride of the Howling Commandos arc. Hickman does a great job of telling the story as it jumps back and forth through time, setting up the climax for chilling dramatic effect. If you’re watching, you can see what’s coming from the beginning of this issue, but it does nothing to dull the “Oh snap!” moment when it’s finally executed. Vitti’s art is also pretty solid here and is slowly starting to grow on me. That being said, I couldn’t help but be distracted by a majority of the characters sporting “screaming mouth” face for the bulk of this issue. It made me miss the great facial expressions we usually get with Caselli’s work on the title. This is one of my most anticipated comics each month, and I can’t wait to see what’s coming next.
