This issue is a must buy for any fan of Cap., Nick Fury, the Howling Commandos, or America for that matter. Every page of this issue is infused with a sense of patriotism that surprisingly isn't forced or hokey like so many similar stories. The issue's main characters, Nick and his Howling Commandos, are men that would do anything to protect their country and the world for that matter, no matter the cost. These men are above politics and state boundaries and thus the issue doesn't get muddled in the party politics that can often derail similar stories. Instead Hickman uses this issue to clearly identify for the reader the purpose of this series and the importance of Nick Fury in the Marvel Universe: to protect the world from serious threats when the UN and sovereign states cannot. Some may dismiss the use of a UN hearing as a boring and unnecessary framing device but the hearing is an essential story element. The inability of the UN or nations individually to take action is exactly why the Marvel Universe needs Nick Fury and it also highlights the difficulty of achieving similar results in the real world. Besides the issue's great overarching concept, the pages that depict Cap. and the Howling Commandos storming Normandy are really the highlight of this issue. Vitti and Hickman collectively make these pages some of the most powerful pages I have read in a comic in a long time.
Overall Vitti's art in this issue is pretty solid. I wouldn't call it breath-taking or jaw-dropping but it isn't just average either. Vitti's storytelling is incredibly effective, the tone and feel of the art matches the story perfectly. Specifically, the WWII scenes are where the art truly shines.
Even though Vitti is effective, Hickman is the star of this issue. Hickman's ability in this issue to comment on society, while also telling a clear and entertaining story, shows me that Hickman has finally hit his stride in writing mainstream comics. I have been a Hickman fan for a long time and absolutely loved his image work but at Marvel at times it seemed as if he was still trying to figure out how to hold on to his bold ideas and yet tell a more mainstream story. The writing in this issue reminds me a lot of Ed Brubaker. Brubaker is a master of telling a clear and simple story and yet commenting on society in an complex manner.
Ultimately, I highly recommend this issue. If you jumped off of Secret Warriors because of its inconcistency early on, you need to jump back on with this issue. Although there are some elements here that will work better for those that have read this series the whole way through, this is a great jumping on point.
