Normally, I can take or leave Simone.  On Wonder Woman, I find her to be rather inconsistent.  But on this title, she’s been gold.  I think that’s the result of being able to work with characters she isn’t afraid to make seem down and dirty, because that’s who the Secret Six are.  With Wonder Woman, sometimes she respects the character too much to make her truly shine.  Here, individual and powerful characterizations are as bright as day… with an often leaning bias towards Catman, of course… but I can live with that.  What really wins me over is the dialogue.  Both how superb it can be at times, and the economy used to achieve those moments.  Bane, who has seemed somewhat odd up to this point, really steps forward once we get into his head a bit, and his goading of Junior forced me to pause and just smile at the page.  Ragdoll also comes through with some great one-liners.  We get a reveal at the end as to Junior’s identity, and while it’s not an ah-ha moment, fans of previous minis will get a little more out of this.  The art, as always, looks great and is very crisp.  I don’t think I have a single bad thing to say about this creative team.  They make one fun book.

  1. Agreed.  I love this book.  I like how Bane and Jeannette got more fleshed out this issue (I read she’s the new sisth member.  Thank God it’s not Tarantula, I hated her in Nightwing).  Nicola Scott’s art gets better every day, and Gail Simone does an awesome job giving us alot of story for 22 pages.  What’s wrong with Catman?  I like what they’re doing with him.  Couldv’e used more Ragdoll.  And I STILL miss Parademon!  Glad the story didn’t get derailed for Faces of Evil.
