Secret Six #1 was one of the single best comic book issues that I’ve ever read. I could go on for paragraphs about its greatness, but I won’t do that here.

What I will do is this: gladly assert that issue #2 continues in the same vein of awesomeness that #1 initiated, albeit lacking, ever so slightly, some of the intensity, edge and wit of the latter.

The happiest news is that as of #2, the beginnings of a trend can be clearly seen–this is not going to be a book solely driven by its punchy dialouge and finely crafted visual storytelling– there’s also an exciting plot developing, driven largely by one of the creepiest villains ever to crawl out of his box toward the gleaming light of day.

That being said, the issue had its flaws. The Ragdoll-related humor is, unsettlingly, already getting old, and the marquee ‘Bat v. Cat’ conflict did little for me. Much more engaging were the prison-break/kidnapping scenes. Suprisingly, Bane is turning out to be one of the most interesting characters, as he ruminates on the strangeness of love. He also contributes this issue’s best moment, stating mildly “I do only what I know is right” while slamming a steel rod into the crotch of a red-haired giant of a man (who responds: “you hit me in the ornament-things!”).

My hat is off to Scott, Hazlewood and Wright for their respective pencil, ink, and color work.

Great stuff.
