Secret Invasion: Front Line gives us a non-super hero eye view of the
hours leading up to the skrull invasion depicted in SI #1. And for the
most part, the lack of superheroes presented in these pages results in
a book that just sort of makes you go “meh.” The book seems designed to
give us a sense of the human experience, as we’re introduced to a few
non-powered characters in the hours just before the invasion.
Unfortunately, the folks we’re introduced to aren’t all that
interesting, nor do we care that much about them. As a result, seeing
them in jeopardy isn’t all that compelling. It’s another perspective on
things when all is said and done, but that’s about all it is. For SI to
really take off it seems imperative that they start showing the
ramifications of the invasion and not just minute back-story details of
things we already know. Not sure if I’ll give this one another chance,
truth be told.

  1. I felt much the same way.  I love the concept of the Frontline books — the idea of ordinary people caught up in a superhero world is always compelling to me — but the group of people this book chose to follow just seemed like a generic assortment, a la any disaster movie you can think of.  Unfortunate, because I like Ben Urich, and the idea has a lot of potential.

  2. What exactly was up with that nurse’s uniform?  Did Ben Urich stumble onto the set of "Naughty Nurses"?  I feel like they found the poor artists version of Leinil Yu to do pencils.
