I agonized over buying this issue in the shop. It’s not because I don’t like the series, but I’m just not really in to the AvX event. I eventually picked it up because I remembered that Remender did a great job with the Venom issues during Spider-Island. They were tied in, but seperate enough that I didn’t need to read the other books to enjoy the issues. I hate to report that this issue didn’t quite capture that same magic.

The issue itself is not badly written. It just feels completely and utterly pointless. A team of Avengers (which includes only a few cast members from the series) goes out into space to fight the Phoenix. While I appreciate Remender’s great idea for trying to defeat the Phoenix, the mission just isn’t very exciting because you know its doomed for failure. If they had won, it would have made the event proper pretty pointless. Sometimes stories such as these hold interesting character moments or action, but there’s none of that here. Beast, yet again, chews out another teammate. It was cute with Clint, but seems a bit heavy handed here, especially since he’s a character that’s not without his own faults. The issues ends on a cliffhanger that didn’t have an impact for me because the character is one I don’t care about (but apparently should) and from the solicits, I know that he’s probably not going to be around anyways.

On the art side of things, I thought this was completely inappropriate for the series. Guedes draws in an Aeon Flux style, which looks pretty bad for a lot of the characters. Thor, especially, looked really horrible in this issue. The coloring was interesting as everything seemed to be in the pastel family of colors. It certainly was interesting and didn’t detract from the art. Again, I think that it wasn’t quite appropriate for the story though as these characters are taking on an ominous force and are risking there lives. To me, this book just didn’t look as good as in the past. If Gabe Hardman wasn’t available, they definitely should have brought in someone in his wheelhouse as it certainly would have been more appropriate to the story.

I think I’m dropping this book during the AvX tie-in. I’m not digging the story or the art. The completist in me is screaming right now, but I have got to stop buying books I’m not enjoying. Here’s hoping the books returns to form after the tie-in.
