I run hot and cold on this title. I find the character of the Scarlet Spider to be very appealing, both for his personality and his suite of spider powers. Scarlet Spider is the bad ass Spider-Man because Kaine Parker’s moral compass is not entirely true and unerring. This makes sense, since Kaine was not raised by responsible and loving parents like Uncle Ben and Aunt May. Scarlet Spider has the basic spider powers of being able to climb walls, super strength and agility, but he also has organic webbing and those fun stingers. He has a “spider-sense” that doesn’t warn him of danger, but indicates to him what the spiders in his vicinity are sensing. Unfortunately, Chris Yost has written a couple of recent arcs that have been duds. In the latest stories, Kaine has embraced his position as a “spider totem,” an idea that J. Micheal Straczynski introduced in his run on Spider-Man, and one which I’m not sure that I understand. Chris Yost has not exactly clarified the idea, either. Luckily, this issue finds the epic of Kaine back on track. The Scarlet Spider made a deal with the Assassins Guild in which he reluctantly agreed to assassinate someone for them. The Guild is calling in their favor, and wants Kaine to knock off Wolverine. The idea of killing Wolvie is ridiculous, barring finding some way of keeping him submerged in a vat of acid until his flesh dissolves, or incinerating him in a lava flow, but Scarlet accepts the challenge. Aracely decides to help Kaine, for some crazy reason, and she is instrumental in neutralizing a number of mutants at the Jean Grey School due to her psychic powers. Aracely, you understand, is either possessed by, or an incarnation of, an Aztec god. I have the feeling that this arc will end with Scarlet Spider and Wolverine teaming up to take on the Assassin’s Guild, which could be a good time, indeed.
This issue’s pencils by Carlo Barberi are more than acceptable. Barberi’s style is similar to that of Ryan Stegman, the artist who inaugurated this series. Faces are expressive, and the action is fluid.
