I skipped most of the Venom/Scarlet Spider crossover, “Minimum Carnage.” After the first issue, it seemed that the event was not inspired by a good story idea, but rather a desire to goose sales. But “Scarlet Spider” 12.1 looked intriguing, so I picked it up, and I have not been disappointed. Chris Yost is taking a tact similar to that of Rick Remender when the latter was writing “Venom.” This feels like an old school Spidey tale. Kaine is different from Peter Parker in that he is more bad ass (Kaine slices the nose off of a pimp.), and his powers a bit different (I do love the stingers!) but this is very much the kind of street level adventure that Spider-Man had in many of his classic stories. Scarlet Spidey trolls the Houston criminal underworld looking for clues just as Spider-Man used to work the criminal networks in New York. Three new villains are introduced in this issue, and they even sound like Spider-Man enemies. The Mark, the Arranger, and Bruiser sound like they came from the same central casting agency for villains as the Shocker and the Rhino. Kaine also has the Parker angst, but he doesn’t worry about an Aunt May or his girlfriends. Kaine feels guilt over his past as an assassin. Kaine has a mission statement, but it’s not “With great power comes great responsibility,” rather the more aggressive, “With great power also comes the ability to rain down hell on those who prey on the weak.”
The pencils for this comic are easy on the eyes, and credited to Paulo Siqueira and Neil Edwards. I suspect that Edwards drew the last few pages, although the transition is smooth. I like the panels separated by webbing, and the look of distaste on Kaine’s face as he contemplates the sleeping Aracely, and realizes that he has become a hero against his better judgment. The Asian character, the Mark, actually looks Asian. Siqueira’s style reminds me of the excellent work done by Lan Medina on “Venom.”
