Month after month, Jason Aaron reminds that Scalped is the best comic on the currently being published. Aaron has the uncanny ability to make the reader feel sympathy for even the most despicable character. The way Aaron makes his characters all fit in the gray area of life reminds of my favorite television show the Wire or even Oz. Each character is flawed enough that the reader just has to feel bad for them. Every character in this book is dynamic in their own way as Aaron leaves no character flat.
The chosen character this time is Diesel, the one sixteenth Native-American, and his time in jail. Even though by this point Diesel should be regarded as one of the “villains” of the book, I could not help but to sympathize with him. Diesel’s past of trying to fit with his “people” is just simply heartbreaking as his genuine interest in his heritage is taken advantage of. Aaron shows us exactly what it takes to become a man as deranged as Diesel and I bought every second of it.
Usual artist R.M. Guera is absent this month but is filled in by the suitable Davide Furno. While no artist will be able to perfectly match Guera grimy world, Furno manages to get pretty close. The facial expression on these characters is amazing detailed as I see the pain in young Diesel face.
If for some reason you aren’t reading this book, I urge to buy the trades and to catch up in issues. You won’t regret it for a second...plus a dude totally gets SCALPED IN A PRISON YARD at the end of this issue.
