My pick of the week was between the dizzying optimism conjured by Justice Society #22 and the crashing depression provoked by this here title. In the end it was Scalped # 24 which provoked me to turn my keyboard to my first review as part of the ifanbase. I had the pleasure of reading the past three issues of Scalped back to back this morning as it is one of those special books that I keep in reserve for when I need a comic I KNOW will be great without reservation (sorry, no pun intended).
First, the art. While I didn't object to the fill in work we've had prior to the GRAVEL IN YOUR GUT story line, it was nice to have Guerra back. It's as simple as this - he owns this book. The look of Scalped is synonymous with his pencils and they're perfect. It's detailed and immaculately paced. It's got a style all it's own and fits with both the atmosphere and actual subject matter of the story.
As for that aforementioned story, well that's what Scalped is all about. There's been comparisons to TV shows like The Wire in the past and as time goes by I think it does indeed share attributes with the characteristics of that classic. I think the two main reasons being that 1) it wallows (in a good way) in a particular dark underbelly of American society and 2) as time goes by it's scope of storylines and characters grows ever outwards. Like The Wire it's not 'just' a police story. Dash barely appears in this story, and this tale is really about two other people, Dino and Red Crow. I'd have to second Connor's declaration that Red Crow is one of, if not THE, best character in comics right now. I love that throughout the several parts of this story he really did resist the urge to let loose against the hmongs, in an effort to fulfill his debt to Gina. This need carried right through almost to the end, filtered with several elements of backstory which showed him in both negative and positive light. In the end it's actually the good aspects of his personality i.e. his efforts to look after those loyal to him, which cause him to break the oath and put an end to the hmongs. There's a measure of acceptance to the ending, Red Crow is who he is, for good or bad and it's all these layers that I love about Scalped. It's about as satisfying as a monthly read gets.
