As many people know, Scalped is my favorite on-going series right now, and I passionately love this book.  So it pains me to write a less than stellar review about this month’s issue.  I mean, it really hurts me…or maybe, it’s just my heart burn…

So what was so awful about this issue?  The art!  Oh my goodness was the art in this issue HORRIBLE!  While I thought Furno did an admirable job with the last issue, I just could not stand his pencils in this one.  Most of the characters look as if they were drawn and colored with chalk, which, when compared to Guera’s gritty, detailed lines, just looks horrible.  There are some face shots in particular that just don’t sit well with me, particularly in the scenes with Dash and Carol.  When pulled back from the characters, the art is not that bad, but up close it just looks nasty.  This is a textbook example of sketchiness not equaling grittiness.  Please, Vertigo, please, put Guera back on this book.  The last thing this book needs is a bad artist to keep people from buying it!

The story in this issue was still very good, but not much really happened, which is kind of a bummer considering I was ready for the story to move forward.  As it has been pointed out before, we’ve been stuck in a week for the last 18 issues, but as a reader, I’m ready for the story to move forward.  As this is part one of a new story arch, I’m hoping we see some forward momentum from this series.

So, with this issue, we may see a little bit of a stumble, as slight as it may be, from the series that has yet to be bad.  I just Aaron and know that next issue our minds will be blown.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 1 - Poor

  1. Though I respect your opinion, and certainly prefer Guera’s art, I thought the art was at least sufficient if not pretty solid.  It definately provided clear expression of the characters and what was happening.  I can see that not every close up of the people was amazing, but far from poor in my opinion.  Also I thought the issue, while not moving the story along, was an excelent look at the characters, giving Carol some needed development, and showing how her relationship with Dash is developing.  Guera will be back after next issue, but until then, I’m fine.  Very solid issue.

I’m right there with you Neb, in terms of my love for Scalped, and I am usually in agreement with you on reviews.  This time, unfortunately, I have to disagree.

  2. Cool, cool.  I appreciate your opinion on the art, and I guess you make some points about it.  It’s just really not for me.

As for the story, I agree with you that it was an amazing character piece, but I was just hoping for a little bit more movement in the story.  While I love the look at these characters, we could have these moments with a little bit more story too.  Actually, I was kind of hoping for a storyline to develop with the cop from last issue and his hunt for Gina’s killer.

Thanks for disagreeing with me! 🙂

  3. I’m also not a fan of sketchiness, but I actually thought the art on this issue was less sketchy than the last issue haha. Can’t wait to have Guera back though. In terms of movement for the over-arching story, I would be getting a little restless if this was going to be a long story arc but since it is only a two parter I’m not bothered at all. Take care!

  4. I’ve been thinking more about the art because I gave the art an average with Furno’s last issue that I reviewed.  I think my problem with this one is that his sketchiness just looks awful in the darkness and with close ups.  The last issue he drew, if I’m remembering correctly, the color pallete was a bit brighter and a majority of his pencils were pulled back.  But yeah, this issue looked like barf.
