It takes a special kind of writer to compose a story that has nothing do with it’s main character but everything to do with the setting of the story.  Jason Aaron continues to blow my mind with this series as he composes an amazing tale about another cop on the reservation.

The character in this issue is none other than Office Falls Down, who dilligent readers will remember as the wounded officer in issue #3 and one of the good cops on a force of crooks.  The significance of this character is important:  He is Bad Horse’s opposite.  While Bad Horse seeks some sort of retribution and peace while taking no steps to actually make it there, Falls Down finds his path in this story and returns himself to the way he was.  And what we see in this story is an amazing character showing brass balls to criminals.  He’s a guy who can take down someone without violence, and that’s a powerful thing.  Add that to the fact that he’s on the trail of Gina Bad Horse’s killer, and I think we’re bound see this character take a real role in this series.

And I’m definitely on board for that, particularly since there could be an interesting dynamic that could develop between Falls Down and Bad Horse, and ultimately, this character could be a guiding force for Bad Horse down the line.  The bottom line is this:  Jason Aaron continues to write one of the best comic series out there.

I actually really enjoyed the art in this issue.  While David Furno doesn’t quite have the detailed grittiness that R.M. Guera does, his penicls have this rough edge to them that caters to this book.  His art is detiled yet not, and the lines of the characters have this sensuous flatness to them that’s very appealing.  I feel like his style is a cross between Jason Shawn Alexander and Jock, but yet it’s very distinct.  While I missed Guera’s style, this guy did a great job filling in.

Scapled continues to be just the thing to scratch my comic reading itch.  It’s an excellent companion to super hero books in that it can take you away from all of the capes and tights and still deliver amazing stories with great visuals.  You should be buying this…and you know it.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good
