SCALPED #15

If you’ve ever paid attention to a word that I’ve written on this site, you should know, then, that I absolutely, wholeheartedly love this book.  I’m obsessed with promoting and pimping this book on anyone I know.  It’s just that good.  I’ve been on board with this series since issue one, and it hasn’t let me go since.  In fact, as of right now, it’s squeezing me so tightly, I’m afraid of what levels of obsession it will take me to next.

I write this to let you know, that, possibly, I may be a little biased.  Maybe just a little.

You see, what this book does better than any other one is that it just grabs you with it’s setting and it’s characters.  This is not a book about some redeeming hero.  No, this is a book about the scum, the forgotten parts of our society that none of us ever think about from our couches.  But this book puts it right into your face and makes you look at it.  In staring at it though, we’re forced to ask the question: is there any good in this place?

And the beauty of this book is that, yes, there is.  From the smallest action from a character to the biggest “Oh shit!” moment, this book gives glimpses of the human experience.  There’s redemption to be found in this place and there’s regret enough to bury others, but somehow these character’s go on.  They move through the narrative toward something, whether it’s heaven or hell.

With this latest story Jason Aaron is giving us a deeper peek into the soul of the main character.  As he works to solve the case of a dead mother, we see him slowly deal with the recent death of his own mother.  And as he bonds with one of the orphaned children, we see a reflection of his inner child, the part of him that’s been buried for so long.  We see a softening to this character that we didn’t think possible in the first issue when he kicked ass with his nunchucks. It’s funny to think that it was only 14 issues ago, and when you think about it like that, it’s shows just how much growth Jason Aaron has weaved into these characters, and just how much life Guera’s pencils have brought into this world.

I’ll close my review with what is only appropriate:  If you’re not reading this, shame on you.  Go buy the first trade.  It’s ten bucks.  And it’s amazing.  Become a part of this book, of this world.  See how important it is for this book to continue going.  It will be a sad indeed if they ever cancel it.

  1. Wow.  Tell me how you really feel.

Actually – I am new to this book.  So – I am in the process of catching up (maybe this weekend?) – anyway – I am loving it so far.

I’ll join the crusade to pimp this book.

  2. Word.

  3. This issue was "Oz level" grizzly.  In the best way.

  4. When I had read the first issue and flipped to that last page where they reveal Dash being a fed, I was a little disappointed, it just seemed sort of like a cheap thrill.  I’m proud to say that fifteen issues later  I cannot complain about antying from this book.  Without a doubt, this is my favorite monthly right now, just plain consistent.

And you know one of the best things about Scalped?  It’s always on time!!  Thats good comics.

  5. I remember when I picked up the first couple issues of this book the artwork bothered me.  Now, fifteen issues in I couldn’t imagine anyone else working on this book.  The look of the book is so dirty and gritty and it works perfectly.

This series continually yanks my heart strings!  It seems like that last 2 or 3 issues have all had moments where you could just feel the pain.  The moment in this issue was when our "hero" sees that his mother had framed and  put his arrow head collection on the wall.  It was a really great moment and the moments I thrive for as a comic book reader.  Hell, it’s what I look for in any sort of story telling!

I think more people should be reading this book because it’s AWESOME.

  6. I have been really into this "Dead Mother" storyline.  I’m a sucker for stories like this, and have been moved by quite a bit of it.  It definitely tugs at the heart strings, and I’ve really enjoyed getting to know Dash over the past year.  He’s one of the most interesting characters out there right now, hands down.

And the art work has always been so perfect for this book.  As leland222 pointed out, the dirtiness is just so perfect.

    I heart this book.
