I’ve given a lot of Sam and Twitch comics a read over the years it seems.  I liked the Bendis run quite a lot, which seemed to be an interesting precursor to stuff like Powers and I was also gripped by the early Marc Andreyko/Scott Morse issues of the subsequent relaunch.  So when I saw this new series, I took notice, but it wasn’t antil I saw the art that my radar really went into overdrive.  I love me some Euro comics creators, and as I opened this first chapter I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed.

The art is lovely.  It’s crisp and flows nicely.  There’s plenty of detail, but not too much and Erbetta is great at telling the story.  Every character is an individual, and they move and emote realistically.  I’ve no idea if he’s capturing NYC correctly, but he’s definitely giving us the sense we get of the city from other media like TV and movies.  So artistically it’s a definite joy to behold.

On the writing side there’s an intriguing mystery.  Sometimes there’s plenty of talking, but Blengino also knows when to let the art tell the story.  The interaction between the characters is strong, and his Sam is a lot of fun to read.  There’s the common problem of a certain stiltedness, which I think often comes as a result of the language barrier.  Blengino may have written in English or it may have been translated, but either way it is only natural for the language not to flow as naturally as it could.  I also didn’t know whether to be charmed or a little exasperated by the determination to name all the walk on cops after characters from Hill Street Blues.  Still, it’s an interesting story and the characters are sympathetic and true to past versions, so well worth a look.

So it’s not perfect I would say, but it’s certainly very good.  If nothing else, it won’t feel like everything else you read this week, and makes me think that it was well worth taking the chance.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
