Imagine that Roger Ebert walks out of a movie twenty minutes into the picture and writes a review. He goes back into the film, watches another twenty minutes and walks out and reviews that part. The process repeats every twenty minutes until the movie is done, and he has written four different reviews the last of which is the only one that has the hindsight needed to fully judge the experiance.
Middle issues in an arc, especially with a new writer on a book, are hard to review. The first issue we can focus on whether or not the creative team "gets" the characters. The last issue we can review the story. The middle issues... well we are largely just left with the experiance of reading them to comment on. I have the advantage of not being an iFanboy, and thus could remain quiet on the issue but I'm not going to do that. No dear reader you're going to get my full unvarnished opinion of this book now and God help you...
It was good.
That was not unexpected, the book has been solid through several different creative teams for some time now. Tim Drake is a very likeable character, and even Batman's a nice guy around him. Drake also seems to be a character that a wide variety of authors can get a handle on, unlike say Dick Grayson, and thus with the excpetion of a few missteps (the Ra's Al Ghul crossover for example), Drake is a consistent character.
It's that character that takes us through a middle issue that really does not offer much. The mystery around the possible return of Spoiler deepens while Batman and Robin take down a comical villain armed with hot dog condiments. Having not read the Batman books while Spoiler was alive I'm not naturally inclined to be interested in her sudden re-apperance but as long as the book stays this good I'll go back into the theatre for the rest of the film.
