Now this is the RESURRECTION MAN I’ve been waiting for.

This book is great. That’s just the thing. The pacing teases us with progression on several plots, opening avenues for where we’ll be going next, maybe. The action (because there’s a fair bit of it) is brutal and engaging – suffice to say that Mitch goes through a few sets of powers in the process. And that’s a cool thing that you can’t really get anywhere else.

I just really liked this issue. It hits me right where I want RESURRECTION MAN to hit me: good use of his unique powers, the right amount of revelations about Mitch and his powers and situation (and those of his enemies), solid dialogue and action. I find that I really like the Body Doubles, and they serve as a good opposite number to Mitch.

RESURRECTION MAN as a whole doesn’t have the level of mastery of some of the other Dark books, but it’s very cool, and a little less surreal and heady. (Honestly, I think it’s much better paced than ANIMAL MAN is, too.) If you’re only reading one Dark book, read SWAMP THING. But if you’re reading two, at least give RESURRECTION MAN serious consideration.

  1. I’ve been really enjoying Resurrection Man and all of the ‘Dark’ books in the new 52 that I read (which is all of them except ‘I, Vampire’). I’d say that my biggest criticism of Resurrection Man is that DnA need to flesh Mitch Shelley out a bit. Personally, my only post-Flashpoint exposure to the character was in DC 1 Million, and other than his powers I honestly can’t think of any distinguishing characteristics of Mitch. I was in a similar boat with Animal Man (I’d only read one trade, the one with Grant Morrison in it) but Lemire has fleshed Buddy Baker out enough for me to feel like I know him. I think, at this early stage, the Body Doubles have more personality than Mitch. Hopefully it’ll change as the series progresses.

    • I am collecting the Swamp Thing, Animal man, and Ressurection man, I get something different from all three books. I reallly like the tone of all three titles. I thought I wouldn’t enjoy Swamp Thing as much, but it ened up being my pick of the week last week. I haven’t read any of the past Ressurection Man material, so I am pretty fresh to it, and learning as things unfold. There is enough going on to keep me interested. Right now I can’t see wanting to drop any of these titles.

    • I’m new to all three characters, and like Ollywood I do find something different in each of the current series such that they don’t really overlap. Still, they beg certain comparisons in some of the themes and stuff, besides all being Dark books based on Vertigo properties (or at least Vertigo-like…I don’t remember if Resurrection Man was Vertigo or not).
