Red Tornado has always been a favorite character of mine. A secret pleasure that made me buy cameos of him throughout the last 20 years of me reading comics. This issue brings it all back to the basics that were Red Tornado before the crazy "I'm just a bag of air" times that we saw debut in the 90's Firestorm and Captain Atom series.
The story begins with Tornado's secret identity life, (A life I don't think has been explored since the RT mini series that came out in the 80's.) and introduces the reader to his supporting cast of characters Kathy Sutton and their adopted daughter Traya. We see a concise yet very explanatory glimpse of how the android is still an android with his reaction to parents at a school recital and then the mystery begins as Red Tornado soon discovers through a beacon that has been activated in his head that there are elemental siblings he never knew he had. We are then introduced to the Red Torpedo (Water), the Red Volcano (Earth), and the yet to be revealed Fire elemental Red Inferno.
The story is ripe with possiblities and creates a storyline that I believe we may see become a major part of the DC U in the future. (Likened to the Azrael series and its effect on Batman.)
I'm interested in now finding out more about what has happened to Red Tornado since he was a scrap heap in 52. (I would have liked to see some of that explained, but there's still 5 more issues to do it.)
This series looks to be a fun superhero comic with a touch of the glory days of RT from the 80's, and I'm hoping it stays the course in being just a fun mini of adventure, action, and discovery for which it already seems to be heading.
The Jose Luis's art is fantastic with perfect contrasts in color with Guy Major. I'm hooked to on for now and will probably see it though because of my hidden RT passion.
