I have found “Red She-Hulk” to be a pleasant surprise. I haven’t read anything by Jeff Parker since the days when he was writing “Agents of Atlas,” a title that started with promise, but eventually lost narrative steam. This first arc of “Red She-Hulk” is a plot driven story in which Betty Ross has seen a glimpse of the future where super humans created by the U.S. military come to dominate humanity. Red She-Hulk, with the aid of an underground SHIELD unit and Machine Man, has been trying to end this military program by, well, smashing it. Anyone who has read early Hulk comics will notice that Betty Ross has certainly come a long way. Betty used to be a shrinking violet, but she has been recast in a feminist light as an assertive, stubborn and determined woman. She also hates/resents Bruce Banner for reasons I don’t know, since I’m not a regular Hulk reader. The art here by Carlo Pagulayan and Wellington Alves is good, if unspectacular. The action flows well, and is easy to follow. Betty’s facial expressions are always on the mark.
