It surprises me that there are many who are down on this book. I am not sure what it is that intrigued me about the Tim Drake story – I am not a Batman reader, know little about Drake and the other Robins, and am not especially drawn to Yost or Bachs.

Yet I think that this is a great chase story. There are two superb elements here. First, Tim faces the classic narrative problem of having a firm belief when all rational evidence suggests otherwise. Tim knows he is not crazy, but even Dick wants him to cool his enthusiasm, which only serves to heat up his fervor to find Bruce Wayne. Second, Tim has no chance of succeeding alone, so he has to ally himself with Ra’s al Ghul, an enemy, albeit a begrudgingly respected one. How far can Tim go without forever compromising himself? When he finds Bruce, will Bruce congratulate him or admonish him?

The art here is quite good, but it is not great. I could read Batman & Robin for the art alone. No chance on this book. Cool cover, though.

This should prove to be a terrific ongoing, and I remain quite excited.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 3 - Good

  1. I’m glad you are liking this. #4 is a step up from #3, but it just doesn’t put me in the same seat I felt like I was riding in for #s 1 & 2. Right now I feel like this might be the first Batman Reborn title to hit the dropping block. I even liked Outsiders more this month! I didn’t think that was possible!

I still have hopes that the next arc might actually delve into why Tim Drake is looking for clues in Europe all this time. As long as it stays $2.99, I’m not in that much of a hurry to drop it.

  2. @robby – Clearly, Yost has not done a great job explaining why Tim moves from location to location. This is not Rex Mundi or The Da Vinci code – very little attention is paid to the clues themselves, which is a shame.
