I’m having trouble caring about Red Herring anymore. It’s not really the fault of the writing exactly, but more the fault of the overall structure of the book. Where we are now in the narrative is that every month there’s a plot twist and every character is potentially a panel away from turning out to be completely different than we had so far been lead to believe. Done in moderation this kind of structuring can create a powerful sense of drama and tension. Done in excess though, as seems to now be the case with Red Herring, what you end up with is a story that’s nearly impossible to connect with in any lasting way.

When everything in the story is a red herring, what you end up with is just frustration for having invested any time in the narrative at all. Each issue becomes a jumping on point or a jumping off point because it almost doesn’t matter what just happened or where the story is going. The only information you come to trust is the panel in front of you which drastically cuts down the motivation to turn the page.

Story: 2 - Average
Art: 4 - Very Good

  1. Glad to see I’m not alone in feeling this way.  I can’t imagine the ending of this series being in any way satisfying.
