I sat down and read issue one and two back to back.  And I just don’t care.

One of the things that makes sci-fi great is that it puts people in strange situations, and gives them interesting plots.  Plots that seem to always become secondary to character development.  The X-Files wasn’t the X-Files because of all the aliens and shapeshifters, it was Mulder and Scully learning to understand each other, and then having to face their superiors together that made it such a fun show.  And the best episodes of Star Trek were when two or more characters were trapped in some perilous situation and had to get to know each other in order to work their way out of trouble.

Red Herring is on the right track, but it doesn’t seem to click.  I imagine this has to do with the gimmick: the introduction of several plot points that may or may not have anything to do with the stories.  The red herrings.  Another problem I have is the stupid names.  They’re a given in a lot of comics, but Penny Lane and Red Herring are just too silly for me.

The only thing I’ve really enjoyed about the series are the titles of the issues: “Blue Makes Her Look Fat” and “There Better Be A Damn Good Reason I Had To Fly Coach” give the series a sense of fun that the interior never quite lives up to.
