Having only recently got through the trade paperback of “Red” and seeing the film over Christmas, it was great to find out that a one-shot prequel to the comic was being released. The original book is an absolute masterpiece of artwork and compressed storytelling; it doesn’t take long to read, but it is wonderfully marvellous to behold. This prequel issue had a lot of that. At forty-odd pages it felt meaty, and almost rivals the original in size; looking back at the past of Paul Moses and how he was manipulated into a horrible and violent situation. Nobody draws quite like Cully Hamner and this issue highlights just what a master of the craft he is; even when the writing started to lack, the art was leaping off the page and engaging the reader with its subtle use of colour and definition. Having Hamner pen the story, too, feels like more or a ringing endorsement that this is merely a cash-in on the film and the trade paperback, but as Hamner is a co-creator of the book it’s good that they allowed him to write the issue failing to draw in Warren Ellis.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
