Wouldn't it be nice to read an ongoing series where each issue pushed an overarching story along while also being interesting as a stand alone issue? What about if nearly every issue threw a curve-ball that made you excited to see where it was going next? And if it had great art to boot?
R.E.B.E.L.S is just such a series.
That this issue for example. The set up is that the REBELS are being attacked by Black Lanterns. We're all expecting a moment of "but wait... your not dead?!", followed by a fight scene, followed by the heroes running away cos the black are invisible or whatever.
Not REBELS, this series uses the Black Lantern attack as a device to take down most of Starro's generals, have Vril's son run to to him for help (with Starro and Black Lanterns in tow), bring out the conflict between Vril's son serving Starro instead of him and ends with Vril pissed off and ready to bring the fight to Starro.
All of this with, what I consider to be, some top notch writing and art.
Maybe Sci-fi isnt your thing. Maybe Vril Dox being an arrogant bastard isn't your thing. But there is no denying that R.E.B.E.L.S isn't making full use the serialized storytelling format and delivering one hell of a ride each month.
Highly recommend
