Space opera is a wonderful concept. It can succeed brilliantly, but it must balance two opposing poles: the grandiosity of suns, moons, and planets, and the smallness of relationships, emotions, and humanity. The writers, Abnett and Lanning, have often been praised for their ability to plot wonderful stories in the former vein. They seemingly always succeed in crafting logical, engaging, and deep tales about power clashes in the far reaches of the Marvel Universe – places originally envisioned by Jim Starlin, enriched by Keith Giffen, and now mastered by Abnett and Lanning.

However, the current story about the Inhumans is really a collection of small stories. One is the tale of how the Inhuman family will succeed at ruling the Kree Empire. Medusa and her Inhumans truly envision themselves as benevolent monarchs, and their goal is to revive the flagging Kree civilization. Another, truly captivating, story is that of Ronan and Crystal, originally married as a matter of political expedience. It is clear that Ronan and Crystal have grown to respect each other, and now they have begun to love one another. Several decades ago, Crystal married Quicksilver, known as a hero, but with the heart of a scoundrel. Now, she is begrudgingly attracted to Ronan, once known as a force for fear, but with a noble heart.

The current issue is as good as this kind of comic could be. It deserves not to be spoiled, and I will honor that.
