I don’t like to review about people that I know outside of their work. It happens I’m either too critical or not critical enough. I’ve known Taki for online 5 or so years, and seen her around the con circuit for most of that time. I’m going to write this and see how it goes, but I want to say, this is not a personal attack; it’s just how I feel about the book based on its own merits.

Firstly, I love Oeming’s work. This book’s strongest part was Oeming’s art. He has a great style that is the right balance between cartoon and insanely graphic. I’ve been following his work since the powers preview in CSN and it has really only gotten better. The scene with the cannibals is exactly the type of thing I think he does really well.

Overall I think the story was fine. It seems like huge tragedy that splits the hero community down the middle and causes untold collateral damage is going to become its own subgenre. I know exactly 1 Evelyn, and, which is normally my case, I projected the one I know on the character in the book. I usually only do this if the character hasn’t been defined well enough to have its own voice. Seeing as this was the first issue, it is more than understandable this was the case.

I had two major problems with the overall structure though. I think it’s kind of a cheat to have your narration be newspaper articles. It’s really only half a step up from having a page at the front of the book detailing the universal status quo for you.  

My other big problem is, I absolutely hate fake musical lyrics in place of actual story. I never feel it adds any sort of insight or dimension to the characters except, more often than not, this character is the emo douche bag that plays his guitar on the beach to get chicks at the bonfire party.
