This book may get over-shadowed by the launch of The Punisher #1 that was released last week, but I really hope not, because this issue just reminded me why this is one of the best comics being released right now.
I won’t give away the big reveal from this book, but it really is massively satisfying. We’ve had a story going for a few issues now where Frank Castle (the punisher) has been thrown into prison and has lost his will to fight and maybe even to live. We’ve gone through his past and the events that laid up to him becoming the mass-murdering vigilante that we all love, and here we get the pay off. Although we’ve sort of returned to the status quo of this book, rather than have it spin off into something more original, Jason Aaron has found a way to make that feel exciting, as if the book has become reinvigorated. This series really is a must for anybody who is even a little interested in the character of the Punisher.
I don’t want to say too much about the artwork because it really does feel like Steve Dillon is the only man for this role now. But although I’m not a massive fan of his work (primarily due to his lack of shading), there is some great stuff here. The way he draws the difference of Frank as a young man and the Punisher now is amazing. They are clearly the same person, but are a lifetime apart.
So in summary, buy this book. It rocks
