PUNISHER #55

Award for the most boring comic I’ve read in recent memory goes to Punisher #55. I never thought Ennis would bore me but he sure found a way.

This issue contains printed transcriptions of military phone calls and even excerpts from a book about an event Punisher was supposedly involved with. These parts of the issue were sort of cool. That’s about where my praise ends on this issue.

The issue has a scene with a drunk Nick Fury calling some men “faggots” which is classy. Didn’t work for me.

It’s sad when homophobic Nick Fury is the highlight of the issue. The rest of the time is spent listening to old men on a golf course try and figure out a way to kill Punisher. It is page after page of them teeing off and repeating themselves. I’m not one of those guys who is angry if two people in a comic book talk instead of fighting something. I LOVE when characters talk to one another but this was just awful.

This was most disappointing book of the week by far. Did anyone like this issue?

Story: 1 - Poor

  1. I thumbed through it and when I saw the page of Fury calling people faggots, I put it down.  Not that it’s offensive, but I would like to think that someone as worldly as Fury would be a little less narrow minded.  If I recall, he was drinking, but still…it doesn’t seem very Fury-esque.

This sounds horrible, but I didn’t see any shooting in it so I put it back.  I know, I know.  Sadistic right?  But that’s what the Punisher is about.  After reading your review, I’m glad I passed.

  2. I understand that this is a max title and Garth Ennis is writing it but it just didn’t make any sense for Fury to use say that.  It was shock for the sake of being shocking.  (Which is sometimes Garth Ennis in general. Preacher excluded of course.)

  3. I think the "faggots" line fits the Fury character Ennis has created in the Max line.  But if you’re use to the 616 Fury, I understand not liking that.

Other than the text excerpts, which I hated, I liked this issue.  The idea of sending soldiers at the Punisher to challenge his morality is great.  This issue was  a really great setup.
