I gave this book three issues, and that’s enough for me. This series is basically Punisher done as an action movie. There are plenty of scenes of our hero narrowly avoiding explosions, running away from groups of armed assailants and jumping through windows. There’s even the requisite “look how evil of a villian I am” scene with the Hood at the beginning. All action movie staples. But the problem for me is that I’m not watching a movie, I’m reading a comic. I could go into a whole spiel about certain forms of media aping other forms, and how that tends to weaken both in the long run, but I won’t. I’ll just say that I miss Fraction’s Punisher. In his run, it always felt like there was more going on than just chases and shoot outs, and that the character interacted with the Marvel U in an interesting way. Here, it’s just the same thing we’ve seen for years and years (barring Ennis’s out of continuity run). And the introduction of Microchip 2.0 is just a disgusting bit of retreading on the writer’s part. The only bright spot for me is the art. It’s everything you could want from a Punisher book, with just the right amount of dirtiness, but not to dark so that you can’t follow the story. Too bad I just can’t get on board with the pedestrian direction Remender is taking this book.

Story: 2 - Average
Art: 4 - Very Good

  1. I’m gonna give it a couple more chances but I don’t expect it ot stay off of the chopping block for all that long.
