I pity John Prophet. All of them.
He’s been through some shit thus far. He’s been shot at with corrosive missiles, had his arm sliced off and been stabbed in the weird gelatinous arm that grows back in its place. But now he’s activated a whole universe of other John Prophets, buried on multiple worlds, and together they have to rebuild the Earth Empire. And I’ll bet Brandon Graham is going to have them lose a few more limbs along the way — if not more.
A concept as big as Prophet deserves a payoff as big as this issue. Now Graham has a limitless supply of John Prophets to tell stories about, on multiple different worlds, and anything could happen to any one of them. John Prophet #1 dies? Next issue: The ongoing adventures of John Prophet #2! Genius.
Simon Roy is absolutely on point in this issue, giving us some energetic fight scenes and more big space action and creatures. Prophet’s facial expressions, or lack of them, are priceless: Boredom, determination and surprise, all rendered simply and effectively. Next issue we get Farel Dalrymple switching on, and going by his cover, the basic style and tone feel very similar to Roy. I’m staying tuned. New worlds, and new John Prophets, await.
