Powers was always one of those books that I had heard about over the years that, for some unexplicable reason, I ignored.  I had people telling me left and right, “Dude, this book is awesome.  You should read it.”  And I knew they were probably right.  But I just didn’t want to get involved.  Well, it turns out the iFanboy crew was able to succeed where my friends never could.  I started picking this book up with issue #25, and I haven’t looked back since.

This issue reminds me what it is I love about this series.  As you read through the pages, through the dialogue, it’s easy to see that this book is a labor of love.  Bendis just loves these characters and loves this world that he’s created.  The character moments are dynamic and the story moves from moment to moment.  This is one of those rare books where almost everything that happens is important.  I remember flipping through these pages breathless as I moved from scene to scene, catching every moment.

And what hasn’t been said about Oeming’s art.  It’s just gorgeous.  He was destined to draw this book, and he knocks a homerun with each and every panel in this book.  He uses the space appropriately and sets a tone and pace with each and every panel.  One of his strengths can be found in the character faces.  When he draws Walker, you can see his pain or his joy.  In Deena, you see this tortured soul, and no words can convey this like Oeming’s pencils.

This book is just quality.  If there’s anybody like me who’s avoided this series, do yourself a favor and get over it.  It’s just damn good.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. You know, I don’t even attempt to remember plot points on Powers from issue to issue.  I’m sure it reads great in trade, but I’m totally content with semi-regular visits to this universe.

This review hits on many of the reasons why.

    Nicely said!

  2. First off, great review.

Powers was one of the first books that really got me into comics.  It’s a really accessible book since it isn’t totally bogged down by decades of continuity.  However, the continuity they have been building since the beginning of the series is easy to follow whether you’ve read the entire series or not.  Bendis has created such an amazing rich world for these character to interact in.  Of course it doesn’t hurt when you have Mike Avon Oeming creating that world from nothing.

Oeming’s artwork is fantastic!!!  This is one of the few books I buy where when I’m done reading it I go back through simply to enjoy the artwork.  At first glance it looks simple but what Oeming does with a few lines is incredible.  It reminds me of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s work on Scott Pilgrim where they can draw so much emotion from a character with so few lines.

It’s a fantastic book and I’m always excited when I see it on the shipping list.

  3. I read death of Retro Girl the first story arc and although I found it good and I must say I don’t know how the story has been since, but it did not get me very excited about this book.  I wouldn’t mind picking up a couple trades of it or a big collection if there is one.

    Great review.
