After the gold standard 70’s throwback, quality kung-fu adventure found in the Immortal Iron Fist, it’s hard not to pick up anything with the Shou-Lao brand on it with the hopes of it retaining that former glory. Power Man and Iron Fist #2 isn’t quite there, but it’s not so bad either.

Van Lente presents a basic young gun/ meets new master tale that is entertaining, but not completely satisfying. Cage and Rand banter is always fun, and you could always sense that weird, but completely rateable bro-mance affection between the two characters, whereas with Alvarez, it’s the “I’m a hot head that gonna have to learn something!” dialogue that can be handled right, but here it just feels generic. Alvarez is interesting, with a fun back story that could lead to a great, albeit probably B-List role in the MU. Danny had all the great personal idea’s the Fraction/Brubaker/Swierczynski run produced, but were shot down, and pushed to the side with inadequate explanation by the recent Power Man series, which is a shame.

This issue felt right with this series, and introduced the type of B-List world on the outskirts of the regular MU that is a lot of fun simply because nobody cares about it. I’m 90% sure the editors don’t even bother reading these scripts when they find out it doesn’t have anything to do with the mainstream MU, Spider-Man, Wolverine, or any canon or continuity.

I.E:
“I want to do a series where Power Man and Iron Fist have to solve the case of the future robot dinosaur assassination of former President Jimmy Carter, so as to prevent an new timeline in which the Robo-Dino’s are hunted to extinction by said former President.”

“Alright, and this, uh, this doesn’t have Wolverine in it?”

“That wasn’t my plan,no…”

“You sure? We can add him in, ya know.”

“I think it works better like this.”

“Okay…”

“Do you…want to see my script?”

“No.”

“Awesome.”

The art is a lot better than I expected, but nothing that sends me up the wall. There were three artists on this issue (Wellinton Alves, Nelson Pereira & Pere Perez), but they looked inter changeable to me, and maybe that is a failing on my part.

Overall, besides the fact that no matter what, I will never get the magic back of the Fraction/Brubaker/Aja/Hollingsworth “My God this book makes me feel sexual” type feeling, I am still enjoying it. It’s a definite recommend if you want a fun tale that is a step away into the weirder side of the MU. You can probably still find the first issue at your local CS (mine still had two stacks of first issues on their shelves).

P.S- Lady Gaga? (i.e- Editors don’t care).

P.S.S- That may sound like its an attack on the editors (But it’s not.)
