Where can you find a Pterodactyl with Mickey Mouse shoes and gloves that has heat vision, a flannel wearing axe-wielding lumberjack Velociraptor, a camouflage print machine gun handed T-Rex, a reference to the Police, Ben Grimm versions of three popular DC heroes, Sasquatches and a giant glue cannon all in the same place? Power Girl issue 23, that’s where.
This month’s installment has solidified my opinion that Power Girl is one of the (if not THE) most enjoyable books that DC is publishing right now. I’ve been following it from day one and as the second creative team nears their first full year on the title, it just gets better and better. With the exception of some of the JL: Generation Lost tie-in stuff that confused a few readers, which is no prob for me since I’m reading that too, it is very accessible, extremely funny at times and well put together.
This issue is a continuation of last month’s story where a new magic-based villain appears on the scene. Typically, magical fights can be a bit dull but there are no punches pulled here as Zatanna and the new villain Siphon (he siphons other people’s magical powers….get it?) throw down in the streets utilizing everything from magic vines to Sasquatches to magical duct tape which, like regular duct tape, has many effective uses. Superman and Powergirl get caught in the middle of all of the spell casting and, since they are vulnerable to magic, get smacked around pretty soundly.
A recurring theme throughout this title since the beginning is Power Girl struggling with having a real life and a secret identity in which to have that life. Superman gives her some advice last issue which she takes to heart in the fairly predictable reveal at the end. Although most readers will completely see this coming, there really isn’t any other way they could do it.
The Conner / Palmiotti / Grey run on the first dozen issues was awesome, and the Winnick / Basri run has been an amazing continuation of the quality and fun that has been infused in this often misunderstood or misused character. PG has her own book and has lasted two years…..hopefully she can last a few more at this level of enjoyment.
BTW….Zatanna’s ringtone, Every Little Thing She Does by The Police? Perfection.
