I’m speechless with this book, but not in a good way.

I spent this past weekend re-reading all 26 issues to refresh my memory of the story of the title, and what a great read, but after waiting almost 3 years for the final issue, I expected a very explosive ending, and that wasn’t the case.

For starters, Cassaday’s art was not the usual top notch quality. It seemed so off his game, that it felt like a bad imitation of his artwork. As far as the story, there were many good areas, but definitely nothing like what the previous 26 issues were like.

I’m a very easily pleased comic book reader, but this book just didn’t do it for me. I’m not even sure how to rate it, but I’ll be nice and give it a 2.

In short, I don’t think the long wait was worth it.

  1. Have to disagree in almost every respect.  The three-year wait was not to give us an "explosive ending".  Number 26 was the real climax to the story that had been building, and this, expectedly, read like an epilogue.  A sweet way to end the series.

  2. To each his own, my friend… Issue 27 didn’t come close to the caliber of the previous issues. This should have been more like One-Shot special to tell the story he wanted to tell, and not treat it like the long awaited end of the Planetary title. I think all these 4 and 5 stars are from people who are big fans of Warren Ellis, and don’t know when to realize that his work is not always worth reading.

  3. I’m with @ultimatehoratio on this one. The main conflict ended in 26. This was always the way it was meant to end, it’s just been delayed a long time. If I gloss over the amount of time between issues, this feels right. Big climax is resolved, and now it’s the aftermath, the picking up the pieces and the glimpse into the future. Great, satisfying ending.

Also: you may want to reconsider statements like "I think all these 4 and 5 star reviews are from big fans of Ellis…" It’s pretty presumptuous on your part, and a little insulting to people who MAY really think something is worth reading — rather than being a mindless fan, as you seem to be suggesting.

  4. I don’t believe I have to reconsider my statement, I offer my opinion just like everyone else.

I definitely didn’t mean to insult anyone, but as I said before: to each his own…

I’ve been reading comics for over 30 years, and do find that there are mindless fans that keep idolizing writers even when their work is not up to par, this might not be the case, but who knows…

I might be the only person who didn’t like issue 27, but I couldn’t care less. I’ve read it 3 times, and I’m still not convinced that it was all that.

  5. @Zayaz – I understand your theory of Fan-Following behind Ellis, and ppl rating it high JUST because they love him. But I believe it’s an unjustified theory in this case, on this book.

I, for one, am someone who has both loved and loathed Ellis’ writing – the latter outweighing the former as of late. Although when Ellis does things right (ex. Transmetro, Fell, Authority, Iron Man Extremis) the man absolutely hits it out of the park, as he had done on this series – this entire series.

Those images of all the different versions of themselves looking upon whats unfolding – amazing! That’s a lasting moment. That’s a lasting image. That’s how a series makes an unforgettable conclusion. We often forget how hard it is to end a story and how it’s so seldom executed with proper impact and grace deserving of an entire series.

  6. I just read the entire series again…

And my opinion still stands, the last issue sucked!!!
