PILOT SEASON THE CORE #1

Saw this last second at my store and saw that Hickman was writing it so i had to pick it up. I used to wonder why his books were so late and answer myself with the fact that all of them are so dense but now i think i am going to have to say that this guy just bit off more than he can chew in terms of work load, right now he is writing/drawing one book and writing two others with ( if this story gets picked up) another possible on the way. and I really don’t have a problem with any of that.

This was supposed to be a hook issue, get you into the world, get you a full story, make you want more and in that regard it was hitting all its marks. Hickman has a great mind for getting information on a page with graphics. In a two page spread he is able to show the whole geo- geopolitical situation for the galaxy, along with the whys and whos of the story and that frankly is impressive and frees up pages to tell a story.

the characters, what i think might be his greatest weakness, were of a stock variety for a space drama, the hot alien, the creepy one, the silent cannon fodder one. but still, for those who got a chance to speak it wasn’t a bad use of the toys of sci fi. His main character, who narrates the story via a message to his father, was likeable and relatable. Main characters he is good at.

Not his best work but i woun’t mind seeing more of it anyway.

  1. I didn’t even notice this in the comics list. I’ll have to go pick this up. Thanks for the review!

  2. @JumpingJupiter me too. thanks luke.

  3. I love Hickman’s heavily design influenced art.

  4. I’ve been making it a point to get all Pilot Season books and they’ve all been pretty good. Last year Jason Aaron somehow managed to make Ripclaw – the epitome of first-generation Image crap characters (sorry Silvestri/Cyberforce fans) – interesting.

I just wish they’d been released together so the voting system wouldn’t be all screwed up. The aroundcomics.com crew was talking about this the other day and made same good points on this.

Anyway, that Hickman kid is good. Should watch out for him, cause he’ll be a big name someday.

  5. He does amazing work but i would agree this is not my favorite piece of his work.  I am voting for this book though.

  6. Agreed.  Everything Hickmans touched has been great, this isn’t the best, I think I like Pax the most now, but I hope this continues.
