What you need to know: Ex-pat turned mercenary John Bishop is
mortally wounded, but spared from Hell by a renegade demon seeking
redemption. The price of John’s salvation? He’s reborn as the demon’s
personal assassin and charged with ridding humanity of our worst
criminals, sadists, and murderers…with a seven-day deadline for each
kill.

What you’ll love

Nice opening: There’s nothing like seeing a gun appear on the
first page of a comic. I love build up as much as the next guy, but
there are times when it’s nice to get to the action, especially in a
comic.

Tag Line/High Concept: Of all of the Pilot Season candidates I
can most see this one being a ongoing series. The series has a catchy
tag line and a great high concept with legs. Done right this could be a
very successful series, even a movie.

New Twist: When writing a story it’s almost inevitable that
Redemption will be it’s theme. This holds true with this story, but the
story’s premise turns the familiar upside down. The concept is original
which makes this story fresh, despite the familiar themes.

Hero’s Journey: 7 days does a masterful job of fitting in most of
the hero’s journey paradigm into one issue. Because of this the story
is paced perfectly.

What you won’t

Action Scenes: Maybe it’s me but the action scenes didn’t do much
for me. They weren’t bad, they just didn’t stand out. During the books
climax it was hard to tell who was who during the action scene.

Convenient: The ending of the story is very convenient, the hero finds himself in a jam, and he escapes it far too easily.

Bottom Line: 7 days has a great concept that’s executed very well. It’s my pick for the best of Pilot’s Season.
