Over the past several months, every time I’ve found myself having the inevitable “So what do you read?” conversation that always happens when comic book readers meet for the first time, the one book I’ve made sure to give a ringing endorsement to has been Peter Panzerfaust. While I have no idea if any of the people I’ve told about this book actually listened to me, I hope for their sake that they did. Since the first issue, this has been a stellar example of what comics are truly capable of.
Issue #5 concludes The Great Escape arc that has led our heroes from Calais to Paris. The team is down two members, as Felix’s fury at Alain’s death drives him to take the Nazi army on single-handedly while Peter (with some persuading by Tootles) leads the rest to safety. Once in Paris the gang sets up shop in a hotel courtesy of some extreme negotiating tactics by Peter. Time passes, grief is dealt with in various ways, and we learn a bit more about Peter’s past. But of course this is Paris in World War II, and the Nazi’s soon goose-step their way into the city with prisoners (Felix!) in tow. Peter and the remaining Lost Boys put their game faces back on, setting up the next arc which won’t start until September (grumble grumble).
The novelty of this concept could have very easily worn off quickly if it weren’t for Kurtis Wiebe’s flawless execution. The use of a present-day narrator has helped give this book a real sense of depth; this ain’t no Disney Peter Pan. The art has been mostly fantastic as well, aside from the whole “sometimes-they-don’t-have-a-face” thing. Overall, this is a fine conclusion to the opening arc of an innovative and exciting comic book that easily segues into the next chapter. September (seriously, grumble grumble) cannot come soon enough.
Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good
Art: 4 - Very Good
What bothers me about the art, is the way paris is drawn. In some parts it looks likes a muddy village, while it should look like a huge metropole. Issue was good though
