The Outsiders reboot happened a couple of months ago now, so it's a title that runs the risk of being overshadowed by all the new Bat titles released this month, in spite of the use (rather sensibly) of the Batman Reborn logo on the cover. Even I looked at it in my stack and thought to myself, "I'm just not as excited by this as all the shiny, new Batman things going on". However, as usual Peter Tomasi produces the goods, turning out a comic with lots of interesting things going on.
I have to admit I'm still not that interested by the background villains in this story, these shadowy seekers of immortality. However, they provide a decent excuse for Deathstroke to become involved, who is always welcome in any book I read. There's this interesting rivalry between Geoforce and Slade that's developed more since last year's Final Crisis. It makes perfect sense given the pair's history with Terra, Geoforce's sister. This rivalry in turn affects Geoforce's ability to work in the team, providing internal friction, so there's lots of interesting character development alongside the action, which Tomasi tends to do well both here and in GLC.
For me the standout moments, however, were two splash pages. First the Creeper leaps down on the team of intruders in the Outsiders' HQ, clearly batshit crazy and laughing in the old Bwah-ha-ha manner. Tomasi builds the tension to make you think that something's seriously wrong on the HQ and that the villains might gain the upperhand, only to really give us a sense of just how dangerous the Creeper might really be. Then there's the last page, which is a meeting of Vandal Savage and Ras Al Ghul, a moment which promises much and alludes to an interesting past that the pair seem to share (again, perfect sense for these two old immortals).
The art by Fernando Pasarin and Jeremy Haun does it's job well. It's nice and detailed, rising to the challenge of a story with a heck of a lot going on. They pack a lot into a panel and really hit the right notes with those aforementioned splash pages.
It's not exactly doing anything mind blowingly new and revolutionary, but this book is really giving you some bang for your buck. These are secondary DC characters that I've always had a fondness for, even when the company's not really known what to do with them. It may actually make a better trade read, but I'm happy to pick it up in singles for now, and it makes a nice little surprise for me every four weeks.
