When I first heard they were bringin this title I was all kinds of excited . I can still remember reading the original back in my younger days , vanity forbids me from elaborating . But I can remember greedily devouring issues featuring Sgt . Rock , The Unknown Soldier , and The Haunted Tank . These books often told about the horrors of war without being gratuitous or tittillating, and I am convineced that they are the reason that I have a deep and abiding respect for the American soldier .
Well I wished that I could give this one a gushing review but I can't . The story written by Mike Marts was alright ...not bad but far from being good either . It was just kind of a cookie cutter story , nothing really original or unexpected . The story or stories as the case may be was your typical midwestern boy serving in World War 2 intersperced with an African American soldier serving in the Gulf War . Both dreaming of the girl that they love , back in the world . The story of the African American soldier was meant to tug at our heartstrings instead it came off as kind of a bad movie of the week moment . For thise of you who did'nt see the big reveal coming his girlfriend died in the attack of September 11th . The whole thing felt kind of forced instead of letting the story develope . I think had Mr Marts concentrated on telling one story instead of using the lame split story he may have had a good one .
The art was done by Victor Ibanez and it was like the plot , good but not great . He does seem to have a good sense of the older uniforms of World War 2 , but heis modern stuff just lacked anything original . The merc unit was outfitted with weapons that look like they stolen from the set of Predators instead of modern military unit . Like I said it was alright not great but alright . The best part of this issue was the cover done by the master Joe Kubert . No one does it better than this manand I mean no one .
This was your average bullets and bayonets story completely lacking in anything original . If you feel the need to read a WW2 story I sugggest you check out Billy Tucci's The Lost Battalion . This one just did'nt do so well . Maybe next time guys .
Art: 2 - Average
If I could give the cover a score by itself, it would get a 5/5.
