OPTIC NERVE #13

Adrian Tomine

This issue mirrors the format of the last, with three short stories across a range of drawing styles and tones. The initial 1-pager is the funniest, a self-deprecating autobio strip showcasing Tomine’s ludditism, but the real punchline arrives on the letters page. The largest story “Owls’ tells of the relationship between two alcoholic losers, from wary beginning to bathetic end. The characters are flawed and troubled but so human and naturalistic that they become likeable regardless. The final story is a first person narrative of anxiety and young motherhood, told with stunning images of the blandness and uniformity of air travel. Tomine can draw, and he’s a master study of character. This is a great, highly recommended $6 package and strong candidate for single issue of the year.

I picked this up yesterday just because it looked so beautiful.

I read it in a busy South London pub earlier today. At the end of the last story I had a tear in my eye. This is the best comic I’ve read all year. I need less X-Force in my life and more books like this.

  2. I’ve always enjoyed Tomine’s work, and some of those other indie artist.
