This issue served as a de facto conclusion to the main arc of Sven the Returned, the first story of this series [issue 8 feels like it'll be an epilogue to the story]. There was a great twist to how Sven's conflict with his uncle Gorm wrapped up and the sudden turn of events really came to show the humanity and honor of the main character when he had to realize what was more important, his inheritance or his people.
Brian Wood's dialogue has felt perfectly natural coming out of his characters mouths, and to make it anything other than localized to his audience would've made it feel stiff and false -- plus it served as a nice contrast this issue as a new group of people are introduced. The story he's telling isn't of people who would've spoken in a grand and proper or flowery tongue, like in a storybook glamorization, but a personal and relatable story in a very foreign setting. The art by Davide Gianfelice and Dave McCaig has been excellent for this whole story, capturing the grimness of the era, and violence that it seemingly required. I really hope Gianfelice will come back for a future story.
All in all, this has been an excellent start to this series, and i can't help but be excited for where Wood will take it with future stories. This will make a great collection [especially at the $10 price tag for 8 issues], and feel free to jump on with the next story, as each one will tell a separate story.
