A good final issue for “The Little Viking Comic That Could”. When this title launched, it was pitted against Ivan Brandon’s rather flashier “Viking” title from Image. That was the book with the hype behind it, but only lasted a paltry five issues, whilst Northlanders quietly got on with the business of telling tales of the Norsemen, scattered through time and geography.
There were two great triumphs of this series: the first being the consistent tone set by Brian Wood’s writing. The second – by contrast – was the excellence of the artists chosen for each arc.
I really hope that the nature of this excellent series will mean that it lives on long after the single issues have ended. The episodic nature of the stories will lend itself to trades.

If you like your action Medieval and your Vikings sweary, then Northlanders is a book you should seek out.

  1. Ivan Brandon’s VIKING came along when Northlanders was on around #15 or so – they didn’t launch at the same time.
