If you would have told me last year that I would be reading Nightwing and that I would consider it one of the best Batman related books being written, I would have stared at you like you had just been tarred and feathered.  But here we are, a year after you supposedly told me I would be reading this and enjoying it, and I am humbled by your foresight.

Nightwing has been, without a doubt, one of the surprise books for me in the last few months.  This was a book that went from being panned left and right to one of the most solid super hero books on the market.  I have embarked on the adventures of Dick Grayson here and there, but with issue 140, it’s like someone came in and breathed a great big awesome breath of air that just makes this book awesome.  And I think I know who the breather is: Peter Tomasi.

To say that Tomasi gets Dick Grayson is an understatement.  It’s as if Tomasi is Dick Grayson himself, traveling through the multiverse to land in our dimension and time to tell his story.  This book just flows so nicely and captures not only the action that comes with being a superhero but also those very human, very character driven moments that paint the picture of being part of the Batman family.  I read each text box, each strand of dialogue with love and adoration at just how well this character and this story were.  That’s no small feat to do in just three issues.

And yet, I’m sold.  I’m dedicating myself to this book for as long as Tomasi is on it.  He’s just done a spectacular job of making Dick Grayson matter again, something many writers have struggled with in the past.  It doesn’t hurt that Rags Morales draws a damn beautiful book, with dynamic fight scenes and wonderful storytelling.  His panels are just so well paced you get time to really savor just what is going on between the characters.  His style is very clean, which I like, yet has this sort of energy.  When Dick is in his costume, it just feels like he’s going to leap out of page at you.

This book is just fun, and I think that’s what I love about it the most.  It’s not trying to send some message or change the face of comics.  What it is doing, is reminding me of just how fun comics can be when they’re just done perfectly.

  1. Neb I very much agree with you. Not only the best Batman related title, but the best DC book for 3 consecutive months! Thats right I said it, BEST DC BOOK!!!

  2. Yes this book has dethroned Robin as best "Bat Book."  Now if only we could get this Morrison fellow off of Batman so that maybe Batman could be the best "Bat Book?"  I do think Nightwing is an awesome character and find him to be just as deep and developed, if not more so, over the years as Batman himself.
